The USS North Carolina rest in the ports of Wilmington as a memorial to the 10,000 North Carolinians who lost their lives in WWII. Launched only months before the start of the war, the battleship went on to serve in every major campaign of the Pacific. The technology and ingenuity packed into this vessel which, after 50 years, is still one of the most powerful warships ever built, still amazes visitors. The USS North Carolina is affectionately nicknamed "The Showboat" by Navy men, she was the first of the modern American battleships and was considered the greatest sea weapon ever built by the United States.
One of the world's most unusual outdoor dramas, a Sound & Light Spectacular entitled "The Immortal Showboat," is presented during the summer months. The night-time show blends of the spoken word, unique lighting, sound effects, plus visual effects including gunfire and explosions, the history of the USS North Carolina is told in a 70-minute performance as spectators sit off the ship's port bow in a 1,200-seat grandstand to view the show.
