History for Halifax County

The first court if Halifax County was held at Enfield. Halifax was made the county seat by an act passed in 1758. The act was to become effective in January 1759.

Halifax County and the County Seat were named in honor of George Montague, Second Earl of Halifax.

North Carolinians are nicknamed the "Tar Heels".

It not exactly evident where this nickname originated, but it seems to have given birth during the Civil War. North Carolina's troops were said to have tar on their heels, because they would not run in battle even as other states retreated.
